Would Getting Veneers Cause Tooth Sensitivity?

If you’re considering veneers, you may be excited about improving your smile but concerned about potential tooth sensitivity. It’s a common question, especially because veneer treatment can involve removing a small amount of enamel from the front of the teeth. Some temporary sensitivity can occur after veneers, but significant or long-lasting sensitivity isn’t considered a normal part of the experience.

Why Can Veneers Cause Sensitivity?

To place traditional veneers, your dentist may need to remove a small amount of enamel from the front surface of your teeth. Enamel protects the more sensitive layers underneath; thus, those teeth may temporarily respond more to hot and cold temperatures.

Not every veneer procedure requires the same amount of tooth preparation. Depending on your teeth, the type of veneers you’re receiving, and your cosmetic goals, your dentist will determine how much preparation is appropriate.

Some patients may also experience sensitivity because their teeth and surrounding tissues are adjusting to the treatment.

How Long Does Sensitivity Last?

Sensitivity after veneer treatment is temporary, usually subsiding within 1 to 2 weeks. You may notice discomfort when drinking hot coffee, eating ice cream, or consuming other very hot or cold foods and beverages.

For many patients, this sensitivity gradually improves as the teeth adjust. Your dentist may recommend using toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth and avoiding particularly hot or cold foods for a short period.

Sensitivity that is severe, persistent, or getting worse should be evaluated by your dentist.

What If a Tooth Hurts After Getting Veneers?

Not all sensitivity after veneers is necessarily caused by the veneers themselves. A cavity, cracked tooth, gum recession, bite problem, or inflammation inside the tooth can also cause sensitivity or pain.

If one particular tooth remains painful or hurts when you bite down, contact your dentist. They can determine whether the discomfort is part of normal adjustment or whether another issue needs attention. It’s especially important not to ignore severe or spontaneous tooth pain.

Can You Prevent Veneer Sensitivity?

Your dentist will evaluate your teeth before treatment to identify potential concerns that could contribute to sensitivity. Maintaining good oral hygiene and following your dentist’s recommendations after placement can also support your comfort.

Avoiding extremely hot or cold foods temporarily may help while your teeth adjust. If you already have sensitive teeth, tell your dentist before getting veneers so they can take that into account when planning treatment.

Although temporary sensitivity is possible, you shouldn’t have to live with ongoing discomfort. Always communicate any concerns with your dentist prior to treatment, and call them if your sensitivity goes on longer than expected or worsens.
