Although your dentures were designed to fit your individual mouth comfortably and securely, as you age your jaw and gums may begin to change shape. This in turn can cause your them to become ill-fitting and uncomfortable, resulting in painful sores. If you notice these nuisances forming in your mouth, here’s how to safely and effectively get rid of them, and how to keep them from coming back!
What Are Denture Sores?
Denture sores are the name given to areas of the gums that have become painful, irritated, and swollen underneath your prosthetics. Although they can appear for many reasons, they are usually caused by pressure on the nerves in your gums from the dentures themselves, or because of a periodontal infection.
How Can I Treat Denture Sores?
How you treat denture sores depends on their cause. To determine this, your dentist will need to examine your gums in person, but you can get a head start by gently feeling the painful area with your fingertip. If infected, the gums will likely feel tender or swollen, and it may bleed or leak pus.
If it’s not infected, the sores could be hard and small but will generally clear up on their own within several weeks. However, be aware that no matter what their cause, it’s still extremely important to see your dentist as soon as possible to prevent new ones from developing.
Preventing Denture Sores
In addition to treating any existing denture sores, your dentist can also help prevent new ones from forming. To do this, they will need to examine both your mouth and your prosthetics to ensure they fit properly. If they don’t, your prosthetics may require a reline, or it may be time to upgrade to a new pair. You can lower your risk of developing new denture sores at home by doing the following:
- Keep your gums and remaining teeth clean by completely removing your prosthetics to brush them. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean both your real and false teeth and gums, but be sure to use separate brushes when doing so.
- Completely remove your dentures every night before going to bed and leave them fully submerged in a glass of water or denture soak until it’s time to wear them again.
- Clean your dentures after each meal by scrubbing them gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild hand soap. Carefully floss between each tooth and then rinse them well before returning them to your mouth.
- Massage your gums with your fingertips and clove oil for 10 minutes a day, two to three times a week.
- Gargle daily with warm saltwater.
- You can temporarily use over-the-counter pain reliever for any discomfort.
Remember, your dentures were designed to fit your mouth comfortably and should not cause sores or discomfort. If they do, it’s time to see your dentist to have your mouth and your prosthetic checked. Having a secure, pain-free fit is essential to keeping your gums and jaw healthy, so you can enjoy a lifetime of smiles!
