In many cases, this is due to anxiety that their experience may be painful. Naturally, people who might have otherwise rushed to replace missing teeth with dental implants may be a bit hesitant to commit to this treatment if they’re frightened that the procedure and recovery might hurt. The great news is that most patients find the discomfort following dental implant surgery a lot milder than they expected. Here’s why when it comes to this treatment, there’s no reason to hesitate!

Does Dental Implant Surgery Hurt?

The great news is that no matter if you’re getting just one or many dental implants during your placement surgery, the first step is always the same: numbing your mouth. Your dentist will ensure that your jaw feels absolutely nothing during the entire procedure and will not begin any work until you are completely comfortable. Then, once your surgery is over, you will likely still feel numb for at least a few hours.

After the effects of the anesthesia have completely worn off, most patients rate the pain level as lower than that of a tooth extraction.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Dental Implant Surgery?

Once your surgery is completed, you’ll enter the recovery period. Typically, this lasts between ten and 14 days. During this time, you’ll likely experience some normal side effects such as swelling, sensitivity, and bleeding. In most cases, these will peak at about the third day post-surgery and should gradually get better after that. In some rare cases, pain may linger beyond two weeks, but this is usually an indication of an issue such as an infection, so be sure to contact your dentist if it happens to you.

When Will My Jaw Start Feeling Better?

After about two weeks, your jaw should start to feel normal again. The great news is that it doesn’t house a lot of nerve endings in the first place, so the discomfort should never become too severe. Once it is pain free, you can begin expanding your diet and incorporating tougher and crunchier foods back into your diet but be careful to ease your way into it so you don’t experience any accidental sensitivity.

Although it may feel great, it is also important to note that your jaw won’t be ready for your dental implant abutments or teeth for several months. This is because the post itself must finish securing to the bone via the process of osseointegration first. This typically takes between three and six months and is essential for ensuring that the bone has completely healed around the implant and it can withstand full biteforce.

After you get your abutment(s) placed, you’ll need to wait a few more weeks for your gums to heal. That’s because your dentist must make some small incisions in the gums to attach them. This should not affect the jawbone but will require a brief healing period while the tissue closes and your sutures dissolve. When the final restorations (the teeth) are ready to be attached to the abutment, you may also feel some minor sensitivity, but it is typically so mild you won’t need even a topical anesthesia and should not require any recovery period or downtime once complete. In fact, you should be ready to begin using your new teeth immediately after your appointment!

Remember, it’s understandable to be a little fearful about undergoing a procedure like dental implant surgery, but the good news is that most people find their recovery a lot easier and more comfortable than they were expecting.
